— Coach Matt

Founder, Victory Submission Strength

Hi! I’m Matt Guffey –

For the past 17+ years, I’ve been devoted to helping others through personal strength training. I started coaching AAA hockey for the San Jose Sharks in 2015. And in 2020, I opened my own strength training gym, Victory Submission Strength, in San Jose, California.

My team and I at VHP are dedicated to changing people’s lives through individualized strength and mobility programs. Our gym has quadrupled in size since we first opened, and I was voted Business Owner of the Year by Results Fitness University in 2022!

Now for the alphabet soup: I’m a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Certified Functional Range Mobility Specialist (FRC), Certified Functional Strength Coach (CFSC), and a brown belt under 12x World Champion Professor Caio Terra.

I specialize in working with grapplers of all sizes, ages, and skill levels.

If that’s what you want, book your strategy session at Victory Submission Strength today.

See you in the gym!

Matt Guffey

Meet the Team

  • Brendan Tydingco

Brendan is a Certified Functional Strength Coach (CFSC), Certified Personal Trainer (NASM) and fourth year Public Health major at San Jose State University where he is also the Vice President of their ACHA Division II Ice Hockey club. Brendan grew up playing hockey for the Santa Clara Blackhawks and San Jose Junior Sharks.

He is hands down the best at cultivating a vibe in the gym (ask him about all things music) and is constantly on the lookout for the best spots to eat in the Bay Area. His ability to learn quickly and create deep bonds with the athletes he coaches make him a valuable asset to the Victory Submission Strength team!

  • Jess Strole

Jess is a second year Kinesiology major and brown belt under Caio Terra. Prior to her studies she served in the Air Force for seven years, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant.

She is an accomplished jiu jitsu competitor, having won several IBJJF titles as a colored belt including Masters World and American National No-Gi Absolute championships. She has also been a finalist in the adult division at both World and No-Gi World championships. Jess's unique experience with and perspective on competition, mental training, and injury rehabilitation are valuable resources for our athletes!

  • Kelly Gee

Kelly is the administrative assistant of Victory Submission Strength. She graduated with a Bachelor’s in Public Policy from University of California, Riverside. Her organization and resourcefulness help us create a smooth and easygoing environment for both her coworkers and all the Victory athletes.
